Couldn’t we just do with the IPv4 addresses we have?
In order to reach 20% of the world population of 6.6 billion with one address
per person, 808 IPv4 /8’s would be needed. IPv4 only has 256 « slash 8’s »
and as of june 2009 only 28 slash 8’s are left for distribution.
The IPv4 address space clearly cannot sustain further internet penetration
worldwide. 20% penetration defines a massively adopted technology.
Emerging economies are on a roll. End of june 2008 China passed the USA as
number one with 253 million internet subscribers comprising 214 broadband
accesses! 56.2% growth from 162 million subs a year before!
The mobile phone market by itself has already outgrown the IP address space

But is IPv6 ready or still an evolving standard?
IPv6 became a proposed standard in november 1994 as RFC 1752
Core set of IPv6 standards became a IETF Draft Standard in august 1998
This means green light for manufacturers for development and
interoperabilty testing. Interoperabilty testing was facilitated by the
6bone overlay network (1996-2006)
By 2001 commercial IPv6 products became available including Sun Solaris 8,
Cisco IOS release 12.2(2)T and Juniper JUNOS 5.1.
End 2006 IETF recharted the IPv6 Working group as IPv6 OPS (operations)
All current software releases of respectable suppliers support IPv6. Older
hardware could have memory limitations affecting routing table sizes

IPv6 standardization beyond core routers and beyond IETF
Cellular industry: 3GPP and 3GPP2
The converged services concept is based on IMS (IP Multimedia
Subsystem). The IMS standard has IPv6 as a cornerstone.
First LTE deployments in 2010, IPv6 is an integral part
Cable Industry: DOCSIS 3.0 incorporates IPv6; first deployments under way
Wireless industry: Wi-Max standardized for ethernet, IPv4 and IPv6
Sensor industry: IPv6 is at the basis of 6lowpan standardization; routing for sensors
(RoLL) specifies IPv6 only
Grid computing: IPv6 incorporated in Grid standards
Smart grids: IP over IEEE 802.15.4 (.g for Smart Utility) is IPv6 only (6LoWPAN)
NGN: The ITU NGN-GSI initiative incorporates IPv6 in its standards

And do major client and server operating systems support IPv6?
Windows XP, Vista (IPv6 on by default), MAC OS, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris,
HP-UX, AIX, Windows server 2003 and 2008…
Symbian, Windows Mobile 5 and 6, Linux
SAP, IBM, Oracle, Peoplesoft…

International Organizations and Governments endorse the IPv6 push

Some pieces still wanting or missing?
Comprehensive DNS support
TLD DNS support still patchy: only 6 of the 13 roots support IPv6
Support in DNS servers;
IPv6 accessible content
Most major content providers see IPv6 support as problematic and to cause major
problems for load balancing
Clarification or enhancement of some operational aspects:
Security: Firewalls? Teredo?
Network Management support
Some application level catalysts
Vista? mobile push services? Secure VPN? Grid ? First responder? Sensor networks?
IMS? IP address based billing?
IPv6 deployment on the access side
refresh cycle for DSLAM’s and cablemodems, 3G, WiMax, where is Linksys?

And what will happen if we wait? do nothing?
The internet will continue but its growth will be stunted and it will ultimately
whither. Address hoarding? Reclamation? Black market? Multiple levels of
NATs?
Forget the revenues associated with new services and hyperconnectivity
Forget IP converged networks and a truly mobile internet
Forget IP address based billing
Imperil your longer term survival
Probability of delaying indefinitely? Nil
The push for revenue generation and growth will just be too strong.
A number of ISP’s will be trampled, some will ride a new growth wave, some
new ones could emerge.

Buy sufficient IP transit from your upstream suppliers, peer at local IP exchanges for
exchange of local traffic. Be proactive: buy and peer in both IPv4 and IPv6

Did our early emphasis on IPv6 pay off for AS6453?
Visibility, early mover advantage and differentiator in the marketplace
If carrier A offers IPv4 only and carrier B offers both IPv4 and IPv6, other criteria being
similar, who would a tier 2 ISP carrier base go for?
40+ of our major customers connect in both IPv4 and IPv6
IPv6 support has become a must to win a bid
Of around 60 major RFQ’s for tier one IP transit answered in 2008, nearly all included
questions on IPv6 support, roughly 40 gave points to IPv6 support in their response
evaluation and 20 had IPv6 support as mandatory or exclusion factor if not compliant.
Needed now: stimulate growth of the IPv6 component of the overall IP traffic.

Need for IPv4 and IPv6 inter AS routing Congruence
Google made a set of measurements of the deterioration of the user experience
in IPv6 compared to IPv4 due in part to longer RTT’s largely to blame on
excessive use of inter-AS tunnels.
Call for action:
Part of the answer is to make IPv4 and IPv6 routing as congruent as possible.
This is only achieved if all transit providing AS’es in the ecosystem connect to
each other in dual stack. The major IP wholesale providers already connect
dual stack with each other and can greatly accelerate the percolation process
down the internet fabric, closer to the eyeballs, by more actively promoting
and facilitating dual stack connectivity for their respective AS customers.

In conclusion
Last chance to deploy IPv6 as part of the upgrade cycle; further delay could
result in a unwelcome peak in capex and opex as the adoption and the
transition accelerates. It is not that difficult or expensive at least in core.
The short term motivation is the looming IPv4 address exhaustion as well as
some government mandates and the dawn of the mobile BB internet.
The profusion of addresses, enhanced mobility support and auto
configuration features will unleash real IP convergence and new streams of
revenue. IPv6 will only be a footnote.
The one recommendation:
Audit your network for IPv6 upgradeability and mandate immediate IPv6 support in
all IT procurements: services, products and applications and reserve an IPv6
address block from your Regional Internet Registry. Please start now.
