Defining A New Category Of Consumer Device: Mobile Internet Devices
Forrester is providing a detailed analysis of Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs).
- Mobile Internet Devices are a new consumer device family
- Purpose-built (form follows function) to specific dominant applications (web, games, media)...but not to the exclusion of other potential applications and usage models
- The primary application (supported by an ecosystem) will drive adoption
- MIDs will benefit from an "open" architecture where any application developer will be able to target the device without unnecessary interference from the manufacturer or network operator
- Unlike (most) mobile phones, MIDs will rely on a powerful, visible OS to underpin the device UI, developer efforts, and multi-radio connectivity.
