Conditional Access (abbreviated CA) is the protection of content by requiring certain criteria to be met before granting access to this content.
Under the DVB, conditional access system standards are defined in the specification documents for DVB-CA (Conditional Access), DVB-CSA (the Common Scrambling Algorithm) and DVB-CI (the Common Interface). These standards define a method by which a digital television stream can be obfuscated, with access provided only to those with valid decryption smart cards.
Digital rights management (DRM) is a term that refers to access control technologies used by hardware manufacturers, publishers and copyright holders to limit usage of digital media or devices. Whereas copy protection
only attempts to prohibit unauthorized copies of media or files,
digital rights management allows the issuer of the media or file to
control in detail what can and cannot be done with a single instance.
